Kalki Koechlin was born in Pondicherry, India, on 10 January 1984 to French parents, Joel Koechlin and Françoise Armandie, who came to India from Angers, France. She is a descendant of Maurice Koechlin, a French structural engineer, who played an important role in the design and construction of the Eiffel Tower. Her parents are devotees of Sri Aurobindo. She was brought up in a strict environment in Pondicherry and is fluent in English, Tamil, and French.
