At the 62nd National Film Awards, he was awarded the Best Actor for his performance in the Kannada language film Naanu Avanalla...Avalu, in which he played the role of a transgender. With the award win, Vijay became the third actor after M. V. Vasudeva Rao and Charuhasan to win the National Award for Best Actor for performing in a Kannada film. At the same award ceremony, Harivu (2014), another film that saw him playing the lead role, won the award for Best Feature Film in Kannada.
